How Couples and Families Recover Love
and Meaning
Softcover, 288 pages Author:
Craig Nakken Item: 1192
Publisher: Hazelden Publishing and Educational Services
Published Year: 2000 What
happens to the "we" of a family when one member opts for the
blind and single-minded "me" of addiction? In an instructive,
reassuring way, Craig Nakken explains just how families and
couples who have spent years building a life together can lose
their cohesive identity and meaning in the wake of addiction.

and back to the fullness of family by using principles that
restore the "we" of lasting, loving relationships.

Claudia Black Item: 1971
Publisher: Hazelden Publishing and Educational Services
Published Year: 2002

Will Never Happen to Me is the definitive book/workbook for

issues faced by children who grew up in alcoholic
families-shame, neglect, unreasonable role expectations, and
physical abuse. Using narratives and profiles, she describes
survival techniques characteristic of children raised in
alcoholic families, including the unspoken laws of don't talk,
don't trust, and don't feel. First explaining how such learned
responses cause difficulties in adulthood, Black carefully
guides readers in identifying self-defeating, destructive
behaviors and finding a healthier, happier way to live. |

The Official Patient's Sourcebook on Methamphetamine Dependence: A Revised and Updated Directory for the Internet Age
Paperback: 176 pages Publisher:
Icon Health Publications (July 1, 2002)
This is a "must have" reference
book for patients, parents, caregivers, and libraries with
medical collections. This sourcebook is organized into three
parts. Part I explores basic techniques to researching
methamphetamine dependence (e.g. finding guidelines on
diagnosis, treatments, and prognosis), followed by a number of
topics, including information on how to get in touch with
organizations, associations, or other patient networks dedicated
to methamphetamine dependence. It also gives you sources of
information that can help you find a doctor in your local area
specializing in treating methamphetamine dependence.
Collectively, the material presented in Part I is a complete
primer on basic research topics for patients with
methamphetamine dependence. Part II moves on to advanced
research dedicated to methamphetamine dependence. Part II is
intended for those willing to invest many hours of hard work and
study. It is here that we direct you to the latest scientific
and applied research on methamphetamine dependence. When
possible, contact names, links via the Internet, and summaries
are provided. In general, every attempt is made to recommend
"free-to-use" options. Part III provides appendices of useful
background reading for all patients with methamphetamine
dependence or related disorders. The appendices are dedicated to
more pragmatic issues faced by many patients with
methamphetamine dependence. Accessing materials via medical
libraries may be the only option for some readers, so a guide is
provided for finding local medical libraries which are open to
the public. Part III, therefore, focuses on advice that goes
beyond the biological and scientific issues facing patients with
methamphetamine dependence. |

Suicide Tuesday : Gay Men and the Crystal Meth Epidemic
Paperback: 150 pages Publisher:
Carroll & Graf (September 9, 2005)
Crystal methamphetamine, also
known as "crystal meth," has rocked national news headlines as
the often deadly party drug of choice for gay and bisexual men.
The recent media blitz around the so-called "AIDS supervirus"
was only one of virtually thousands of earlier stories that laid
the blame for an outbreak of new HIV transmission among gay men
on impaired judgment brought about by crystal meth use. The
low-priced stimulant—which can be snorted, smoked, ingested, or
injected—increases its user’s heart rate, blood pressure, and
stamina, while decreasing the need for food and sleep. Health
experts estimate that 22 percent of all gay men have tried
crystal meth at least once. Heterosexuals, including teenage
girls, have also joined the millions of crystal meth users and
addicts.
In Suicide Tuesday, Duncan Osborne, the leading journalist on
the topic of gay men and crystal meth, offers a critical,
clear-eyed look on the history of crystal meth, its effect on
gay men, its alleged link to HIV transmission, the gay
community’s response to the reported epidemic, as well as the
media’s role in fostering public awareness but also sex panic
among gay people. |

The Truth About Pot
Ten Recovering Marijuana Users Share
Their Personal Stories
Softcover, 208 pages Author: Joanne Baum
Item: 3130
Publisher: Hazelden / Johnson Institute
Published Year: 1996
Marijuana use has increased over
the past four years and now accounts for over 81 percent of this
nation's illicit drug use. It is widely considered not only to
be harmless to its users but also to have the power to enhance
concentration and creativity, to relieve pain and suffering, and
to offer a much needed respite from the hectic pace of today's
world.
It's no wonder that marijuana is surrounded by confusion and
myth. Used widely during the past three decades, it has been
both praised and condemned. With little or no research up to now
either to corroborate or dispute the myths, many people,
especially teenagers, are confused.
In The Truth about Pot, Joanne
Baum reveals the damage marijuana can do in people's lives. "It
is certainly clear from these people's stories ranging from nine
months to almost fifteen years...that pot is not a harmless drug
to be used with no consequences," writes Baum in the final
chapter. "Marijuana users can lose years from their lives and
experience long-lasting mental and emotional pain." |

Reefer Madness Video
Women Cry for It! Men Die for It!
The 1936 Drug Scare Cult Classic
Video, 1/2" VHS, 66 min, Black and White
Item: 7119
Publisher: Ingram Entertainment Published
Year: 1939 Often dismissed
as a hysterical reaction to the growing drug menace, Reefer
Madness was in fact an influential independent film that
cunningly profited from America's narcotic paranoia. In the
guise of a high-minded educational drama, Reefer Madness
indulges the carnal curiosity of viewers yearning for a glimpse
into a world more sordid than their own.
While an anti-drug crusader
lectures a group of concerned citizens, the town's innocent
teens are drawn into a vice-ridden web of reefers, red hot jazz,
and the insanity they provoke. With frequent detours through
frank sexual terrain, director Louis Gasnier and producer George
Hirliman (who together comprised G&H Productions) proved they
were neither saints nor saps when it came to making movies. They
brilliantly demonstrate the most basic principle of
exploitation: any vice can be indulged to an excessive degree as
long as it is cloaked in a wrapper of education. |

When Painkillers Become Dangerous
What Everyone Needs to Know About
OxyContin and other Prescription Drugs
Publisher: Hazelden Publishing and Educational
Services Published Year: 2004
Whether prescribed by a physician as OxyContin or
purchased on the street as "hillbilly heroin," painkilling drugs
are extremely effective in eliminating physical, emotional, and
psychological distress. The problem is that these drugs are also
incredibly addictive. Misuse of and addiction to prescription
pain medications has become America's latest, complex, and
alarming drug abuse trend. In fact, an estimated 2.6 million
people currently use prescription pain relievers non-medically-a
dangerous practice that could quickly reach epidemic
proportions.
Best-selling author Drew Pinsky, M.D., and five other leading
experts offer practical, plainspoken, and much-needed
information about addiction to painkilling drugs.
