Sobriety for the
Codependent?
Often codependents express
envy that the alcoholic clearly knows what sobriety is:
abstinence from alcohol. But what, they ask, is sobriety
for the codependent?
Codependency in its simplest terms is a "lack of
Self," which often leads to an obsessive focus on the
lives of others. Recovery for the codependent involves
removing the focus from others and placing it squarely
on the Self. When we find it difficult to keep the focus
on ourselves, it is usually because we are uncomfortable
living with our unloving, unforgiving Selves. The Twelve
Steps, meetings and other tools move us through a
process by which we can let go of old patterns and
develop self-compassion, self-love and self-forgiveness.
So one answer to the above question might be:
Keeping the focus on Self is sobriety for the
codependent. Relapse is focusing on others.
God, grant me the
Serenity to accept
responsibility for my Self, Courage
to give back to others that which is not
mine, and the Wisdom to
know the difference.
